Young Professionals Pack Four Vehicles with Donations for Non-Food Pantry

Last Saturday, members of the Barton County Young Professionals stood outside Wal-Mart for six hours collecting household items for the Catholic Social Service non-food pantry. The charity project was overwhelmingly successful, bringing in hundreds of items and over $150 in cash donations.

“The Young Professionals group is designed to provide networking opportunities, develop young leaders in today’s workforce, and engage members to give back to our communities,” says YP Steering Committee Chair Kristy Straub. “It took four vehicles to transport all the items that were collected, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the community’s support of this project.”

The Catholic Social Service non-food pantry accepts donations of laundry detergent, dish soap, diapers, paper goods, and any other non-perishable household items. Catholic Social Service provides a range of services designed to strengthen individuals and families in 28 counties of southwest Kansas. Services include adoption counseling and education, pregnancy counseling, a program for teen moms, marriage classes, disaster relief, emergency assistance, and more. The non-food pantry is just one way the nonprofit organization helps families in need. Catholic Social Service is located at 2201 16th Street in Great Bend, and can be reached at 620-792-1393.

“We are so impressed with the Young Professionals group and the initiative they took with this project,” says Catholic Social Services’ volunteer Connie Smith. “The hundreds of items they brought in will stretch a long way to help families in need.”

The Barton County Young Professionals group is targeted for anyone 21-40ish who lives or works in the Barton County area. Membership is free, and includes lots of perks such as discounts around town, invites to social and professional networking events, free leadership training, and opportunities to get involved in the community.
